Many things built or forshadowed in it were killed by the lack of a coherent plot for the Sequels. Overall: the failure or dislike for the Aftermath trilogy ties into the failure of the Sequel trilogy.
His retirement was probably motivated by the fact the actor refused to do a cameo in the Force Awakens. In the EU we see Wedge grow to be a leader and realize he needed more in life. He married Wexley's mom (forgot her name) and retires. The unknown menace coming from the outer rim that Palpatine built observatories for? I don't think that ever paid off for (unless it deals with the second Thrawn Disney trilogy which I haven't finished). The kid (Wexley?) was an annoying character. Bloodlines did a better job at explaining why the New Republic "failed" (killed by the Story group) than Aftermath. The New Republic disarming within a week of winning was also dumb. In the EU we had a post Alexander the Great galaxy, with Aftermath? Take a broom and brush it aside because it doesn't matter, The Force Awakens ia coming! The trilogy felt like a rushed attempt to set up the Sequel Trilogy by throwing away all logic. Palpatine's plan to kill the Empire for failing, while taking notes from Hitler allowing Germany to die for failing, seems stupid. Daala is probably a worse leader than Sloane, but we got to see how she got where she did. We also had Daala who eliminated the Warlords and united the Empire. The short story she got later on made her somewhat interesting/ competent but as the main character for moving the Empire into the First Order/ unknown regions? In the EU we had Thrawn: a highly decorated and competent leader chosen by Palpatine to be among the top twelve. Rae Slone is head the Empire and she's not that good of a character. My issues with the trilogy lie mainly in the plot. The writing was horrible, but Marc Thompsons narration and performance made a world of difference in terms of making the trilogy readable. I read the first book and heard the audiobook version for the other 2. Question about Thrawn, or Who's your favorite character?
